After spending two years abroad, the Headies Awards made a grand comeback to Nigerian soil with a colourful celebration held on Sunday at the Landmark Event Centre in Lekki, Lagos. This 17th edition, proudly themed “Back to Base,” brought together some of Africa’s brightest talents under one roof to honour achievements in music over the past year.
Popular actress Nancy Isime and seasoned broadcaster IK Osakioduwa expertly hosted the lively ceremony. Their chemistry, humour, and stage presence kept the audience entertained from start to finish, adding a warm and personal touch to the evening.
Music fans were treated to electrifying performances by artists like Qing Madi, L.A.X, Odumodublvck, Kcee, Shallipopi, Flavour, and many others, who lit the stage with energy and passion. Tanzanian star Juma Jux, fresh off the buzz surrounding his wedding to Nigerian influencer Priscilla Ojo, had an unforgettable night. He won the award for Best East African Artiste of the Year and delivered a powerful live performance that had the crowd roaring.
One of the night’s most emotional moments belonged to the late singer Mohbad. In a moving tribute, he was posthumously awarded Best Street-Hop Artiste for his popular track “Ask About Me.” His wife and young son, Liam, accepted the award on his behalf, drawing a heartfelt standing ovation from the audience. A special tribute segment honoured Mohbad’s lasting influence on the music scene, leaving many in the audience teary-eyed but proud of the mark he left behind.
Beyond the glitz and glamour, this year’s Headies felt like a homecoming for the Nigerian music community.
