Transport fares have significantly surged in Kaduna and Abuja following the recent fuel price hike by the NNPC. The petrol price has risen from N617 per litre to N980 in some areas, forcing transport operators to increase fares by up to 50 per cent.

In Kaduna, the fare from the central market to Sabo has risen from N300 to N500, while travelling to Barnawa or Narayi has jumped from N250 to N400, according to checks by NAN.

Other routes have seen similar increases, with operators citing the high cost of petrol as the cause. A tricycle operator, Malam Abubakar Sa’idu, explained that many drivers now buy fuel from black market vendors for up to N1,400 per litre, further driving up transportation costs.

Fares have also increased in Abuja, the capital city. Passengers travelling from Kubwa to Bannex Bridge now pay N1,000, up from N500. Similarly, the fare from Zuba to Berger Junction has spiked from N1,000 to N1,500.

Both the Nigerian Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress have called for an immediate reversal of the fuel price hike, warning of its potential to deepen the already dire economic conditions for many Nigerians.
