19

Legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti has made history as the first African artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, marking a major moment for African music on the global stage.

The late Afrobeat pioneer, known for blending jazz, West African rhythms, and funk into a politically charged sound, will be honored in the “musical influence” category as part of the Hall of Fame’s 2026 class. The recognition places him among a select group of artists whose work has reshaped global music and cultural expression.

This latest honor adds to a growing list of posthumous recognitions for Kuti, who also recently became the first African artist to receive a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Together, these milestones reinforce his enduring legacy as both a musical innovator and a fearless political voice.

Kuti’s music, often rooted in resistance and social commentary, challenged corruption and injustice in Nigeria and beyond. His influence continues to resonate across generations, inspiring artists across Africa and the diaspora.

His induction signals a broader shift in global recognition, as African music and its pioneers gain long-overdue acknowledgment within Western institutions.
