Fatal Accident Claims 25 Lives At Army Checkpoint In Enugu

At least 25 people have reportedly died in a tragic road accident at Ugwu Onyeama in Enugu State along the Enugu-Onitsha federal highway.

The accident which involved 10 private and commercial vehicles, reportedly occurred at a Nigerian Army checkpoint on Wednesday.

According to an eyewitness, a speeding truck’s brakes failed on the steep downward incline just before the checkpoint where the vehicles were stopped, resulting in at least 25 fatalities.

An eyewitness said,

“A trailer plying the newly constructed lane [had a brake failure] and smashed more than 10 cars both private cars and commercial buses.

“The army checkpoint at that axis continues to claim lives. More than 25 persons lost their lives instantly and many rushed to the hospital.”

A video posted on X and seen by West Africa Weekly showed the lifeless bodies of victims scattered on the road, as well as parts of shattered vehicles, including a petrol tanker.
