Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has postponed the release of the music video for her hit song “Burning,” which was to premiere yesterday. This song is part of her debut album, “Born In The Wild,” which has received critical acclaim for its fusion of Afrobeat rhythms with soulful melodies.

In a statement posted on her X (formerly Twitter) account, Tems cited the ongoing nationwide protests as the reason for the postponement. She expressed her solidarity with the protesters and emphasised the importance of their cause.

“Out of respect for the ongoing protest at home [Nigeria], I have decided to postpone the release of the ‘Burning’ music video,” Tems wrote. “Praying for the safety of those outside at this time. May the voice of the people be heard.”

The protest, which officially began yesterday, the 1st of August, 2024 has gained a level of traction with states like Borno, Gombe, Plateau and Kaduna taking the lead. The protest is in response to widespread dissatisfaction with governance and calls for significant political and social reforms.

“Born In The Wild,” released earlier this year, marks Tems’ debut studio album. The album has been praised for its lyrical depth and innovative sound, blending traditional Nigerian musical elements with contemporary influences. “Burning,” one of the standout tracks, has been particularly noted for its powerful lyrics and Tems’ emotive vocal performance.

Tems’ decision to delay the music video release has been met with widespread support from her fans who have praised her for using her platform to highlight important social issues. The new release date for the “Burning” music video has not yet been announced.
