Despite assurances from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) that corps members’ monthly allowance would be increased to ₦77,000 starting February 2025, the Tinubu-led administration has continued to pay the old stipend of ₦33,000.

Multiple corps members confirmed receiving their February allowance on Friday night, only to discover that the amount remained unchanged at ₦33,000— half of the promised increment.

The development contradicts statements made in January by the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, who had publicly assured corps members that the increase was finalised and only pending the passage of the 2025 budget.

The Federal Government has already approved the increment of your allowance. It is no longer news; we have the approval in our hands. What we are waiting for is just the passage of the budget,” Ahmed had stated during an address to corps members in Katsina State.

He promised that by February, corps members would start receiving ₦77,000. However, this pledge has yet to materialise, fueling frustration among corps members anticipating the wage increase.

Speaking to West Africa Weekly, a corps member expressed disappointment over the situation, saying: “Dey play. Na ₦33K these people still pay oo.”(sic)

It will be recalled that NYSC had previously warned corps members against protesting the delayed implementation of the new minimum wage. In August 2024, the scheme’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa, stated that the NYSC was still awaiting an official decision from the government regarding the wage increase.
