Denmark announced on Monday that it will close its embassies in Burkina Faso and Mali as part of a new strategy for its operations in Africa.
The European country plans to shift its diplomatic focus by opening new embassies in Senegal, Tunisia, and Rwanda, Burkina News Agency reported.
This comes weeks after Mali ordered the Swedish ambassador to leave the Sahel country for making “hostile” comments about Mali’s decision to cut diplomatic ties with Ukraine.
The expelled Swedish diplomat, Johan Forssell, had said his country would suspend the provision of development aid to Mali because it allegedly supports “Russia’s illegal war of aggression against Ukraine.” However, Mali and Niger cut diplomatic ties with Ukraine following public comments by Ukrainian officials that supported terrorists’ attack against Malian soldiers and the Russian mercenary Wagner Group in Mali.
Last Tuesday, the Confederation of Sahel States (AES), comprising Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, formally accused Ukraine of supporting international terrorism in the Sahel region. They urged the United Nations Security Council to take immediate action against Ukraine.
