Residents of Delta State in Nigeria’s South-South region have been warned to brace for flood between September 24 and 28, 2024.
The warning was issued on Wednesday by the Director General of the Delta State Orientation Bureau, Dr Fred Oghenesivbe.
Dr Oghenesivbe, who spoke on a radio programme, said that the floods would be caused by heavy rainfalls from September 24-28 and compounded by the release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.
Dr Oghenesivbe has warned residents in high-risk areas of Delta, including Abraka, Agbor, Asaba, Umuakwata, Aboh, Ozoro, Oleh, Otu-Jeremi and coastline communities to relocate to higher ground temporarily.
He added that the state government was making plans to establish IDP camps in vulnerable areas like Ozoro and Asaba and provide for healthcare and sanitation.
It will be recalled that the collapse of the Alau dam in Maiduguri, Borno State, contributed to the devastating flood that killed scores and displaced about a million persons in the state.
This warning is coming after the federal government’s alert about Cameroon’s plan to release water from the Lagdo Dam, an activity it does annually.
The Nigerian government usually fail to attend to dams or make adequate plans against flooding until tragedy strikes.
