CSOs, journalists, and other Nigerians have commenced the #FreeDanielOjukwu peaceful protest at the Nigerian Force Headquarters, Abuja, against the prolonged unlawful detention of a Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) reporter, Daniel Ojukwu.

On Wednesday, West Africa Weekly reported that activists, journalists, and other Nigerians, including Omoyele Sowore, former presidential candidate and publisher of Sahara Reporters, shared a flyer with hashtags Free Daniel Ojukwu and Protect Civic Space on X. They called on Nigerians to join a protest scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Thursday at the Police Headquarters, Louis Edet House in Abuja.

A video posted on X by Fisayo Soyombo, the Founder of FIJ, on Thurday morning, showed that the protesters have gathered in numbers at the Force Headquarters, holding a large banner with inscriptions that read ‘Free Daniel Ojukwu’, ‘No To A Police State’ and ‘Free Daniel Ojukwu’.

At the time of this report, the protest site showed no sight of police presence or vehicles.
