The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced plans to increase the monthly stipends for corps members once the federal government implements the newly approved minimum wage.
The Director General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Yusha’u Ahmed, made this announcement during his visit to the 2024 Batch ‘B’ stream two corps members at orientation camps in Kebbi and Sokoto states.
Ahmed confirmed that the monthly stipends for corps members will be raised from the current N33,000 as soon as the federal government enacts the new wage law.
Recall in July, the organised labour sector agreed to a new minimum wage of N70,000 after negotiations with the federal government.
The bill increasing Nigeria’s minimum wage from N30,000 was passed by the national assembly on July 23 and received presidential assent on July 29.
Addressing the corps members, Ahmed praised their contributions to the nation’s socio-economic development and urged them to utilise their service year for self-development and future planning. He emphasised participating in the NYSC’s Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) program.
At least learn a skill while in camp, and after the Orientation Course, you continue with the post-camp training, Ahmed advised. Try to acquire a skill that would enable you to create jobs and employ others instead of searching for jobs. We have many ex-Corps members nationwide who are doing well in their different vocations today.
The DG assured corps members of their safety throughout their service year, stating they would be posted to secure locations. However, he encouraged them to remain vigilant in their surroundings.
Recall that NYSC had earlier issued a warning to corps members weeks ago against participating in any protests over the delayed implementation of the new minimum wage.
In a statement released by the NYSC’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa, the NYSC said it was still waiting for the government’s official decision regarding the newly-increased wage.
