Christopher Nolan is feeling optimistic about the film industry as 2023 ends. His latest movie, “Oppenheimer,” grossed an impressive $954 million, outperforming superhero and Hollywood tentpole films. Despite being a three-hour, R-rated biographical drama, it became Nolan’s most successful film in his 20-year career.
In a recent interview with Empire magazine, Nolan expressed his confidence in the movie business, citing the success of “Oppenheimer” and the audience’s appetite for unique and surprising cinematic experiences. He highlighted the film’s impact by sharing his experience of sneaking into screenings on opening weekend, describing the overwhelming moment of silence in a packed theatre.
The success of “Oppenheimer” has also influenced other directors’ perspectives. Damien Chazelle, known for “La La Land” and “Babylon,” noted that the film defied expectations, challenging the notion that audiences only seek escapism. Denis Villeneuve, director of “Dune,” emphasized the importance of movies as an art form and praised “Oppenheimer” for bringing the spotlight back to experiencing films in theatres.
“Oppenheimer” is available for rent or purchase on VOD and digital platforms.
