Burkina Faso’s military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has dismissed Interim Prime Minister Apollinaire Joachim Kyelem de Tambela and dissolved the country’s government, according to a decree issued by his office on Friday.
The decree did not specify the reasons behind the decision to remove Tambela, who had served as interim premier since Traoré’s rise to power in September 2022.
Traoré seized control in a coup, marking one of several military takeovers in West Africa’s Sahel region in recent years.
Despite the dissolution of the government, the decree stated that officials in the now-defunct cabinet would continue to perform their duties until a new administration is formed.
Last month, the transitional government froze the assets of former transitional president Paul Henri Damiba, 112 other individuals, and two legal entities.
The decision to freeze their assets were outlined in a decree signed by Minister of Economy Dr Aboubacar Nakanabo on November 19, 2024.
According to the decree, the sanctions also apply to former officials and public figures, including ex-Foreign Ministers Djibril Bassolé and Alpha Barry, journalist Newton Ahmed Barry, and former deputy mayor of Dori, Aziz Diallo.
