Burkina Faso’s transitional authorities have announced that they have foiled a new plot to destabilise the government, state television reported.

According to officials, a suspect offered members of the Defense and Security Forces five billion FCFA, roughly $10 million, in exchange for support in undermining the government.

The Burkina Information Agency (AIB) reported that the soldiers pretended to accept the offer and coordinated a meeting with the individual. The suspect was arrested on Friday, November 8, while attempting to deliver the cash.

Authorities said that an investigation is ongoing to identify any additional parties involved.

The Transitional authorities have repeatedly denounced attempts at destabilisation.

Recall that Security Minister Mahamadou Sana, in a televised address on September 23, 2024, announced the dismantling of an alleged destabilisation network.

The network reportedly included 14 individuals, including former commander of the special forces, Ahmed Kinda, two former ministers, two journalists and unidentified conspirators with ties with Western intelligence officials.

Kind of, arrested on August 30 at a train station in Niamey, Niger, confessed to his involvement in the attempt to destabilise the country.

He revealed that he had two accomplices, including former President Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba and Journalist Abdoulaye Barry, as key sponsors of the destabilisation plot.

Damiba was dismissed from the Burkinabe Armed Forces on October 30, 2024, alongside fourteen other officers. The dismissal was signed by President Captain Ibrahim Traoré, citing “serious misconduct” involving foreign contacts and suspected links with terrorists to harm the state.
