Onyeka Onwenu, the renowned Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress, has died at age 72 after collapsing at a birthday party in Lagos on July 30, 2024.

Onwenu reportedly collapsed after performing at the birthday celebration of Stella Okoli. Despite immediate medical attention and being rushed to Reddington Hospital, she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Witnesses recounted the suddenness of the incident. “It is unfortunate. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli today (Tuesday, July 30, 2024), and after performing, she slumped. She was taken to Reddington Hospital, and she couldn’t make it,” an eyewitness remarked.

Another added,

I have never seen anything like this before. She had just come down from the stage after performing energetically and admirably as always. And went to her seat, where she slumped. It is still like a dream.

Born on January 31, 1952, in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria, Onwenu’s illustrious career spanned decades and touched various fields, including music, film, politics, and journalism. Known for her hit songs “Ekwe,” “One Love,” and “Iyogogo,” she used her music to address social issues and earned the nickname “Elegant Stallion” by the Nigerian press for her poise and contribution to the arts.

In addition to her music career, Onwenu significantly impacted Nollywood, starring in acclaimed films such as “Lionheart” and “Half of a Yellow Sun.” Her dedication to women’s rights and social justice further cemented her legacy as a cultural icon in Nigeria and beyond.
