Bauchi: Heavily Armed Militia Men Kill Several Hunters, Villagers in Forest Attack, Rustle Livestock

Several people, including local hunters and residents, have been killed in a deadly ambush by gunmen in the Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

The attack occurred in the early hours of Sunday, May 4, as a team of hunters from Duguri and Gwana districts patrolled Duguri, Mansur, and the Dajin Madam forest along the Bauchi-Plateau border.

According to reports, the hunters were suddenly ambushed by heavily armed bandits, leading to a gun battle that resulted in fatalities on both sides. Villagers from Sabuwar Sara, who tried to flee the area, were also shot dead by the attackers.

Eyewitnesses said the militia men overpowered the hunters and rustled a large number of cattle and sheep before fleeing. Some of the attackers were reportedly killed during the exchange, but their number is still unknown. A resident, Ibrahim Hussaini, said:

We heard heavy gunshots in the early hours and later found out that many hunters and villagers were killed. The bandits came prepared.”

Although the exact number of casualties is still unclear, local sources estimate that up to fifteen people may have died.

The Bauchi State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement released on Monday. Police spokesperson, SP Ahmed Wakil, said the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, visited the area for an on-the-spot assessment and has deployed tactical teams to track the attackers.

“Upon receiving the report, our teams moved to the scene, recovered the bodies, and began investigation,” Wakil said.

“Preliminary findings revealed that those killed included both vigilantes and civilians from Sabuwar Sara village who were mercilessly shot while trying to flee.”

The police said a specialised team has been directed to intensify efforts to apprehend those responsible. However, organised crime is a persistent threat to rural communities across parts of northern Nigeria, with many residents forced to abandon farming and routine travel due to fear of attacks.
