Babcock University Confirms Death of Law Professor Shot by Gunmen

Babcock University in Ogun State has confirmed the tragic death of Professor Yinka Olomojobi, a renowned law scholar. The professor was shot dead by gunmen at the Ajadeh Event Centre on Sagamu Road, Iperu, Ogun State, between 8 pm and 9 pm on Friday.

The assailants also abducted two other individuals during the horrifying incident.

In an official statement on Monday, Babcock University confirmed the heartbreaking loss of Prof. Olomojobi and described the incident as an act of utmost savagery.

“This came as a rude shock to the entire university community which has been thrown into mourning. The Nigeria Police Force is investigating the act of utmost savagery by these suspected kidnappers.

“The law enforcement agencies in conjunction with the Ogun State government are reportedly on the trail of the perpetrators and more men and women of the security agencies have been deployed to ensure the maximum safety of lives and property in the entire axis of the state”, the statement said.

According to the statement, Prof. Olomojobi commenced his tenure at Babcock University on April 1, 2011, and was known for his vibrant personality and dedication to educating and empowering students.

He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB) from Ogun State University (1985-1990) and pursued his Masters and doctoral degree programs (2006-2010) at the University of Liverpool and Lancaster University in England, respectively.

“The University commiserates with his family, friends, faculty, staff, and students at this time of grief and prays for God’s comfort and courage to bear the loss.

“We assure all our stakeholders- students, parents, host community, faculty and staff that Babcock University will continue to collaborate with all government security and local vigilance agencies to ensure the maximum protection of lives and property within and around the university environment”, the statement added.

The Nigeria Police Force is reportedly on the matter. According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer Omolola Odutola, the gunmen opened fire indiscriminately at the event centre, resulting in the tragic death of Prof. Olomojobi.

Eyewitnesses reported that the professor resisted the assailants, leading to his fatal injury. The police have arrested a suspect in connection with the incident and are reportedly investigating to rescue the abducted victims and bring the perpetrators to justice.
