The Tinubu-led administration said it has concluded plans to increase power generation to a target of 6,000 Mega Watts from 4,000 MW by the end of 2024, after a similar pledge by former President Muhammadu Buhari during his administration.

Recall that in 2016, the Buhari-led administration promised to generate 6,000 megawatts by the end of the year, saying that based on the measures put in place, the target was achievable.

The then Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola gave the assurance insisting that the administration would not rest until it achieved the target of power generation.

“We are expecting that our generating capacity will be over 6,000 megawatts by the end of 2016, 10,000 in 2019, and 30,000 megawatts in 2030, as planned within the maximum of incremental, stable, and uninterrupted power”, he stated.

Nearly eight years later, the country remained capable of generating only 4000MW.

However, the Tinubu-led government through its Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, on Monday, echoed the promise of the past administration during a Senate Committee oversight visit to the Federal Ministry of Power and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

The power minister, expressing concern about the excessive reliance on the national grid, highlighted a new goal of achieving a transmission capacity of 10,000 – 12,000 MW within the next three years.q

According to him, the current administration is determined to break the 4,000 MW jinx that has spanned decades before his appointment as the 47th minister of power.

Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, alongside the Power Minister and other officials, inspected various projects before meeting with members and staff of the Transmission Company of Nigeria in a separate meeting, focusing on the persistent power grid collapse.
