Nigerian stars lit up the 2025 Met Gala on Monday night, blending culture and elegance on one of fashion’s biggest stages. Among them were music powerhouses Burna Boy, Tems and Ayra Starr, renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and other creatives who made Nigeria proud with their distinct style statements and presence

Held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Gala’s theme this year, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”, invites guests to honour Black heritage through fashion, craftsmanship, and identity.

Burna Boy made a strong impression in a custom piece by Ozwald Boateng. The Grammy winner described the outfit as “specially made,” its bold presence matched his personality.

Singer Ayra Starr took a different route. Known for her trend-setting Gen Z flair, she surprised many with a toned-down look – a black tailored suit dress paired with a cane. Her minimalist style stood out in a sea of extravagant outfits.

Chimamanda Adichie brought a literary kind of grace to the red carpet. She wore a flowing red gown by Prabal Gurung, looking regal and fierce. Her look echoes the eloquence she brings to every page she writes.

Tems blended tradition and modernity in an outfit that reimagined Ankara fabric with a Western outlook and a dramatic umbrella feature.

Also present was American-Nigerian actress Ayo Edebiri, whose Benin-inspired hairdo and carefully curated outfit honoured her African roots while maintaining a contemporary tone.

The Met Gala, a fundraiser for the museum’s Costume Institute, is more than a fashion parade. Since 1995, it has been spearheaded by Vogue’s editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, and it continues to serve as a canvas for fashion to tell stories, especially this year, stories of Black identity and pride.

But the spotlight didn’t end on the red carpet.

Later that evening, Burna Boy hosted his first-ever Met Gala after-party, teaming up with South African DJ Black Coffee. The private event featured Afrobeats, laughter, and familiar faces like Adichie, Nick Jonas, Lupita Nyong’o, Central Cee, Priyanka Chopra and more.

Burna’s performance was with a mic engraved with “No sign of weakness.” His motto is also the title of his soon-to-be-released eighth album.
