Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has revealed that American R&B star Toni Braxton receives 60 percent of the streaming royalties from his 2022 hit single, Last Last.
Burna Boy made the disclosure during an appearance on the American podcast Million Dollaz Worth of Game, hosted by Gillie Da King and Wallo267, where he discussed the inspiration behind the song and his decision to sample Braxton’s 2000 hit, He Wasn’t Man Enough. He explained that using the sample was his idea and that Nigerian music producer Chopstix helped develop it into the track. “It was actually my idea, to be honest. I just always wanted to use that sample and I knew Chopstix could do something crazy with it,” he said. “That’s one of the most special creative processes ever.”
The revelation sparked reactions among fans, with some expressing surprise at the percentage of royalties allocated to Braxton. However, Burna Boy later clarified during an appearance on Shopping for Sneakers that Braxton’s 60 percent share applies specifically to the song’s streaming royalties rather than its overall earnings. He also disclosed that Last Last had earned him more money than any other song in his career at the time, despite the royalty arrangement. “But she is taking 60 percent of it. I’m not complaining. Hopefully, she even comes out to one of the shows,” he added.
Released in May 2022, Last Last became one of Burna Boy’s biggest hits, gaining popularity in Nigeria and internationally. The song explores heartbreak and emotional recovery through lyrics that resonated with listeners. The track features elements of Braxton’s He Wasn’t Man Enough, released in 2000 on her album The Heat. The original song earned Braxton the Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in 2001. Last Last is the seventh track on Burna Boy’s sixth studio album, Love, Damini, released in July 2022. The album features 19 tracks, with guest appearances from artists including Ed Sheeran, J Hus, Kehlani and Khalid. The song has reached nearly two billion streams worldwide to date and gained virality on TikTok, reinforcing Afrobeats’ growing presence in the global music industry.
