Senegal Government Orders Football Federation to Stop All Public Statements After World Cup Meltdown

13

Senegal’s Ministry of Youth and Sports has imposed a media blackout on the Senegal Football Federation (FSF), ordering officials to immediately cease all public statements, interviews, and social media commentary regarding the national team’s tumultuous 2026 World Cup campaign.

The directive, issued on Tuesday, July 14, came just one day after FSF President Abdoulaye Fall held a explosive press conference in which he publicly blamed the team’s doctor for contributing to player unrest during the tournament. Fall also addressed sensitive issues including decisions made during the World Cup, the termination of former coach Pape Thiaw’s contract, and organisational failures within the federation.

The ministry said the gag order was necessary to end “sterile controversies that are seriously damaging our country’s image and reputation internationally” and to “preserve national peace and ensure respect for our institutions.” The government also announced it would conduct a “complete and rigorous” official review of Senegal’s World Cup participation.

A Tournament Plagued by Chaos

Senegal’s World Cup campaign ended in devastating fashion when the Teranga Lions, leading Belgium 2-0 until the 80th minute, ultimately lost 3-2 after extra time in the Round of 32. The elimination triggered a cascade of crises:

· Stranded in Seattle: The delegation was left stranded in Seattle for five days after the tournament because no return flight had been booked. Players and technical staff eventually secured commercial tickets, but federation officials and support staff remained stuck in the United States.
· Coach Sacked: Head coach Pape Thiaw and his technical staff were fired shortly after the team’s elimination.
· Player Revolt: Midfielder Pape Gueye announced he would not play for Senegal under the current management, saying: “As long as this coaching staff remains in charge, I’ll be taking a break from the national team.”
· Bonus Disputes: Reports emerged of unresolved bonus payments and financial grievances within the camp, with players reportedly still owed bonuses for winning the Africa Cup of Nations and qualifying for the World Cup.
· Doctor Controversy: FSF President Fall publicly questioned the credentials of the team doctor, a gynaecologist by training, sparking outrage from the Senegalese Association of Sports Medicine, which demanded an apology.

Government Takes Control

The ministry’s intervention represents an unprecedented move to silence the federation and regain control of a narrative that has spiralled out of control. The government is now promising a full audit of the World Cup participation, with the review to be conducted “in strict compliance with procedures and with all due seriousness.”

The FSF has yet to publicly respond to the directive. With the gag order in place, the federation is effectively barred from defending itself or responding to ongoing criticism as the government works to restore stability to Senegalese football.
