Senegal Rejects CAF Verdict, Moves to Appeal AFCON Title Decision

A major controversy has erupted in African football after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) stripped the Senegal national football team of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title and awarded the trophy to the Morocco national football team.

The decision followed a ruling by CAF’s Appeal Board, which declared that Senegal had forfeited the final after their players briefly walked off the pitch in protest during stoppage time. CAF subsequently overturned Senegal’s 1–0 victory and recorded the match as a 3–0 win in favour of Morocco.

The AFCON final, played in Rabat, had already been overshadowed by controversy. Senegal players had walked off the pitch late in the game over a disputed penalty decision but later returned to complete the match, eventually securing a narrow win after extra time. CAF, however, ruled that the temporary walkout violated its regulations, which prohibit teams from leaving the field without authorization, regardless of whether play later resumes.

Senegal’s football authorities have strongly rejected the verdict, describing it as unfair and unacceptable. Officials insist the team completed the match and won on merit, arguing that the ruling undermines both the integrity of the game and the authority of match officials. The federation has confirmed it will challenge the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, setting the stage for a legal battle that could ultimately determine who is officially recognised as African champions.

The decision has sparked widespread debate across the continent, with many questioning the consistency of CAF’s disciplinary measures and the broader governance of African football. In Senegal, the ruling has drawn sharp reactions from both officials and supporters, some of whom see it as a significant injustice.

Meanwhile, Morocco has accepted the decision, with its football authorities backing CAF’s interpretation of the rules and affirming their status as champions. As the dispute heads toward international arbitration, the controversy continues to cast a shadow over the tournament, leaving African football facing one of its most disputed title outcomes in recent history.
