Night Gunfire Near Presidential Palace Sparks Tension in Ouagadougou

Gunshots were heard late on the night of February 28 into March 1 near the presidential palace in Ouagadougou, sending waves of concern through Burkina Faso’s capital.

The incident occurred in a heavily secured area associated with the regime of Captain Ibrahim Traoré. Residents in several neighborhoods reported hearing loud detonations, prompting a surge of speculation on social media. Some supporters of the government initially suggested an attempted coup before later retracting those claims.

According to Radio France Internationale, the incident may have begun with gunfire directed at a vehicle carrying flammable materials. The reported shooting allegedly triggered a fire followed by explosions, which could explain the intensity of the blasts heard across parts of the city.

As of now, the presidency has not released a detailed official statement clarifying the circumstances. In the absence of formal communication, information circulating has largely come from anonymous security sources and indirect accounts, fueling uncertainty and rumors.

The developments come at a time of heightened strain within Burkina Faso’s security apparatus. RFI also reported possible internal tensions within the armed forces, which have faced a series of jihadist attacks against military units in recent weeks. These ongoing pressures are said to have deepened disagreements over the conduct of the conflict.

The situation has drawn comparisons to previous incidents in September 2023, when gunfire in Ouagadougou similarly sparked rumors of a power struggle and was later followed by arrests within military ranks.

Authorities have yet to provide further clarification as investigations continue into the events of the night.
