Tension is rising in Niger over uranium exports as the French group Orano has denounced what it describes as an “illegal” shipment from the SOMAÏR site in Arlit.
Orano, the former operator of Niger’s uranium production, said it learned of the shipment through media reports and asserted that it had no involvement in the operation. The company emphasised that it has not had operational control of SOMAÏR since December 2024, following a change in governance in Niger.
The company stated that it does not know the quantity, destination, or security conditions of the uranium convoy. Orano also said the shipment appears to violate a September 2025 ruling by the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes, which found in Orano’s favour in its dispute with the Nigerien government.
Analysts warn that this incident could further complicate tensions surrounding Niger’s strategic uranium sector, which remains a key resource for both domestic energy and international supply chains.
