President Tiani Makes Strategic Visit to Arlit Amid Uranium and Security Priorities

831

Niger’s President Abdourahamane Tiani has carried out a swift but high-stakes visit to Arlit, a key hub for the country’s uranium industry and border security operations, reaffirming what he described as Niger’s full sovereignty over its strategic resources and territories.

Crowds gathered across Tchirozérine, Dannet and neighbouring border communities to welcome the president as his convoy moved through the region, underscoring the strong local mobilisation around the visit.

During his stop in Arlit, Tiani confirmed that the nationalisation of SOMAÏR,  one of Niger’s most essential uranium producers,  is “irreversible.” Authorities say production has continued despite operational challenges, with more than 1,000 tonnes of yellowcake already extracted since the takeover.

The president then travelled north to Assamaka, a critical frontline town near the Algerian border, where he met security forces who had repelled three attacks within the past year. He pledged additional equipment and support to strengthen border protection.

Officials framed the visit as part of Tiani’s broader message that Niger is moving toward greater stability and economic self-determination, anchored in what the presidency describes as dignity and national sovereignty
