What Is Going On in Gaza Is Genocide, Says Ghana’s Foreign Minister

Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel O. Ablakwa, has condemned Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, describing Israeli military actions as genocide.

The Minister disclosed this during an interview on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Wednesday, September 17, noting that the Ghanaian government has taken a clear and principled stance on the crisis.

Ablakwa, who commented on the United Nations Committee report that concludes Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, stated:

We agree that what is going on in the Gaza Strip is genocide. We haven’t minced words at all. We’ve had the opportunity to engage my counterpart, the foreign minister in Israel, the ambassador here, and we have made clear our point.

In addition, he stated, “At the same time, we have also solidarised with the Palestinians. For the first time, we have made an impressive donation to them. We are probably the only African country that has been able to send aid to Palestine – made in Ghana chocolate, cocoa products – and we thought that we should solidarise and establish the fact that we are not going to sit by and watch these atrocities go on and not be able to bring our humanity to bear.”

In May 2024, Ghana voted alongside 141 nations at the United Nations General Assembly to pass a resolution providing rights and privileges to a Palestinian state and that the Security Council reconsider admitting Palestine as the 194th member state of the U.N.

This move contributes to the Palestinian National Authority’s ongoing diplomatic effort to gain membership in the United Nations for the State of Palestine.

Ablakwa, however, noted that while Accra maintains cordial relations with both the Israeli government and the State of Palestine, the country remains committed to taking principled positions on human rights and international law.

With the UN Commission report concluding that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, Ghana reaffirms its call, alongside other West African countries, in condemning Israel, all while  calling for a two-state solution.
