Nigeria: Parents Decry Ondo Medical University Fee Hike, Warn Of Mass Student Dropouts

Parents and guardians of newly admitted students at the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo City, have raised concerns over an astronomical increase in school fees, warning that the development could force many students to abandon their academic pursuits.

According to a statement from the parents, tuition for critical courses such as Medicine and Surgery, as well as Dentistry, has risen sharply. For the 2025/2026 academic session, indigene students are now expected to pay ₦2,000,000, up from ₦1,683,500 in the previous session. Non-indigene students, who previously paid ₦2,245,000, are now billed ₦2,600,000.

In the statement tagged “Astronomical Increase Of School Fees At University Of Medical Sciences, Ondo City, Ondo State: Save Our Souls (SOS) To Mr Governor”, the parents appealed to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to intervene urgently, saying the increments are unbearable in the face of Nigeria’s biting economic crisis.

The parents stressed that these figures exclude other compulsory payments such as ₦20,000 for Post-UTME forms and ₦100,000 as acceptance fee.

No doubt, the amounts paid up to the close of the 2024/2025 academic session were already considered too high by parents and the general public, let alone these new increases,” the statement read. “Most parents and guardians were paying through their noses, borrowing money everywhere, even with the option of paying in two instalments of 60% and 40%.”
