Burkina Faso and Italy Sign Visa Exemption Agreement for Holders of Official Passports

1.7k

Burkina Faso and Italy have taken a significant step toward strengthening bilateral relations with the signing of a reciprocal visa exemption agreement for holders of official passports.

Effective August 19, 2025, the Italian government announced that Burkinabè nationals travelling with diplomatic or service passports are no longer required to obtain a visa for short stays of up to 90 days.

In a gesture of reciprocity, the Burkinabè authorities quickly implemented the same measure for Italian nationals holding similar types of passports. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this new arrangement highlights “the excellence of diplomatic relations and the mutual trust that unite the two nations.”

Officials stressed, however, that the exemption applies strictly to the territory of Italy. It does not extend to the rest of the Schengen area, meaning Burkinabè passport holders will still need visas for travel to other European countries within the zone.

The agreement is expected to ease official travel, facilitate high-level exchanges, and further solidify cooperation between Ouagadougou and Rome.
