Nigerian audiences are set to witness a new milestone in local cinema as Gammy & The Living Things, an animated feature led by hip-hop star Jude “MI” Abaga, opens nationwide on September 5.

The film, distributed by FilmOne Entertainment, is already hailed as Nigeria’s most ambitious animated project. Abaga makes his animated debut as the voice of Gammy, a determined agama lizard who leaves the safety of his small world to chase big dreams in Lagos.

An ensemble of Nollywood heavyweights joins him. Veteran actress Joke Silva, comedian Bovi Ugboma, and legendary actor Pete Edochie, whose voices bring extra star power and cultural richness to the production.

Victoria Ogar, Head of Distribution at FilmOne Entertainment, described the release as a breakthrough for the industry. “Gammy represents everything we’ve always believed about Nigerian stories; they can be local and universal simultaneously. This is proof that African animation deserves its space on the big screen,” she said.

For Filmhouse Group CEO Kene Okwuosa, the project goes beyond entertainment. He emphasised that Gammy & The Living Things reflects the company’s vision of building a sustainable African film ecosystem. “At Filmhouse Group, our mission has always been to scale Nollywood and give it global visibility. Bringing Gammy & The Living Things to cinemas is another example of how we are pushing boundaries, investing in new genres, and making sure African creativity has the platform it deserves.” Okwuosa noted.

Beyond its production value, Gammy’s story resonates with themes familiar to many Nigerians: leaving home, facing struggles, and holding onto dreams against the odds. Blending humour, music, and relatable life lessons, the film is designed to appeal to both children and adults.

With FilmOne steering its distribution, Gammy & The Living Things is being positioned as a landmark for Nigerian animation. It offers a fresh narrative style while showcasing the depth of local talent.
