Nigerians in Lagos, Ogun Brace for 25 Days of Disruptive 9-hour Power Cuts as TCN Begins “Maintenance”

Residents of Lagos State and parts of Ogun State will experience a daily power outage lasting nine hours over 25 days, as the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) commences a critical infrastructure upgrade on its 330kV transmission line.

According to the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED), the power disruption is scheduled to begin on Monday, July 28, 2025, and continue until Thursday, August 21, 2025, with daily outages from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The affected areas include the entire Lagos State and several communities in Ogun State, such as Sagamu, Ogijo, and Abeokuta. The scheduled upgrade will involve the installation of Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) fibre cable on the Omotosho-Ikeja West 330kV transmission line, which is crucial for wheeling bulk electricity into Lagos and its surrounding areas.

TCN stated that the maintenance work, approved by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Nigeria Independent System Operator (NISO), is necessary to fully operationalise the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. The upgrade will improve real-time monitoring, communication, and management of the national grid, ensuring long-term system reliability and efficiency.

Both Ikeja Electric and Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) have issued public notices, warning customers within their networks of potential power supply interruptions and load shedding during the project’s duration.

The said maintenance is coming amid an epileptic power supply and higher electricity costs that have grounded small businesses. If the upgrade proceeds as planned, power supply is expected to return to full normalcy once the infrastructure upgrade is completed on August 21, 2025.
