Nigeria’s Super Falcons Win Record 10th WAFCON Title in Thrilling Comeback Over Morocco

1.3k

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have become the first women’s national team in the world to win a continental title 10 times, clinching the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in stunning fashion with a 3-2 victory over the host nation, Morocco, in the final.

In a match that will go down as one of the greatest comebacks in African football, Nigeria overcame a 2-0 first-half deficit, showing grit, composure, and championship mentality to complete what they dubbed #MissionX — a mission to claim a record-extending tenth WAFCON crown.

Morocco struck early with goals from Ghizlane Chebbak in the 12th minute and Sanaa Mssoudy in the 24th minute, giving the Lionesses of Atlas a commanding 2-0 lead at the break, and many believed the title was slipping from the hands of the African giants.

But the Super Falcons, undeterred by the scoreline, mounted a breathtaking comeback in the second half.

Esther Okoronkwo sparked the revival with a confidently converted penalty in the 64th minute.

Just seven minutes later, Folasade F. Ijamilusi brought Nigeria level with a composed finish. The momentum had fully swung, and in the dying moments of regulation time, star midfielder Jennifer Echegini sealed the historic win with a dramatic 88th-minute goal.

This victory not only secures Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title but also makes them the most successful women’s national team on any continent, surpassing the USA and China, who each hold nine continental titles in their respective confederations.
