Chinese Box Office Hit ‘Ne Zha 2’ Gets English-Language Release From A24 This August

A24 is bringing the English-language version of China’s blockbuster animated film Ne Zha 2 to U.S. theatres on August 22, with Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh lending her voice to the cast. The film will also screen in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand in IMAX, 3D, and other large formats.

The film, which originally premiered in China during the Lunar New Year in January, tells the story of Ne Zha, a powerful but misunderstood boy born to mortal parents. As an ancient force threatens humanity, Ne Zha must rise above fear and chaos to become the hero his world desperately needs.

Directed by Yang Yu, Ne Zha 2 quickly became a phenomenon in China. It is now the highest-grossing animated film ever made, the most successful non-English language movie. It ranks as the fifth highest-grossing film of all time worldwide, with earnings surpassing $2.2 billion.

The original Chinese version had already earned $20.8 million when it was released in North America earlier this year.

The film’s success has also helped revive China’s cinema industry after a slow 2024. Thanks in large part to Ne Zha 2, China’s total box office for the year has already reached $4.15 billion.

As A24 prepares to introduce Ne Zha’s powerful story to English-speaking audiences, all eyes are on whether the film will capture hearts beyond its homeland the same way it did at home.
