Legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, is dead. Fondly known by fans as Dodo Mayana, the iconic shot-stopper passed away on Thursday morning after a prolonged illness. He was 61 years old.

Rufai, a legendary figure in Nigerian football, was a key part of the golden generation of Super Eagles players. He famously helped Nigeria clinch the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in Tunisia and was the team’s first-choice goalkeeper during the country’s debut at the FIFA World Cup the same year.

His calm presence between the sticks and commanding performances earned him the admiration of fans both at home and abroad. Throughout his career, he played professionally across Europe, including stints in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain, notably with Deportivo La Coruña.

Rufai earned over 60 caps for the national team and was celebrated for his leadership, professionalism, and dedication to the game. He remained a respected voice in Nigerian football after his retirement, mentoring young goalkeepers and making significant contributions to grassroots development.

Tributes have poured in from across the football community, with former teammates, fans, and sports officials hailing Rufai as one of the greatest goalkeepers to have ever worn the green and white.

Forever in our hearts, Dodo Mayana,” read a statement from Super Eagles Official handle. “Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond.”
