Kayode Peters, the Nigerian filmmaker and director behind some of Nollywood’s most loved comedies and stage plays, died at 47 in Toronto, Canada. His family confirmed that he passed away peacefully on the morning of June 28, 2025, after battling a long-term illness.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved, Kayode Peters Adewumi, who passed on peacefully this morning, June 28, 2025, in Toronto, Canada, the family said in a statement posted on his official Instagram page.

KP braved, challenged and conquered a long-time illness until his last breath this morning.

For over two decades, Peters, fondly known as KP, left a lasting mark on Nigeria’s entertainment landscape. Shortly after graduating, he began his professional journey in 2000 with the production of The Twilight Zone. But his big break came with My Flatmates, a reimagined version of a beloved African Magic comedy series that became a favorite across Nigerian homes.

Peters wasn’t just a TV genius. He helped shape modern Nigerian theatre and was the creative force behind films like Crazy Grannies and Dream Job in 2021 and Excuse My African, his first international film, shot in New York City.

His love for storytelling extended to the stage, where he directed hits such as Extended Family and Doll House. Through his work, he gave laughter, joy, and perspective to audiences who saw themselves reflected in his characters.

As the news of his death spread, tributes poured in from fans, friends, and fellow creatives who remembered Peters for his artistic brilliance and humility and commitment to the craft.
