Reactions as 100% Hike in Driver’s Licence, Number Plate Fees Takes Effect in Nigeria

820

The 100% hike in the cost of driver’s licences and vehicle number plates has officially taken effect across Nigeria, following a directive from the Joint Tax Board (JTB), which has drawn reactions from Nigerians.

The new price structure, announced in May, was attributed to the incorporation of enhanced security features and the rising cost of production. Authorities say the adjustments are necessary to ensure the sustainability and security of the motor vehicle registration system.

However, the adjustment has been met with widespread dismay from Nigerians, primarily commercial drivers and low-income earners, many say the hike comes at a time of severe economic hardship.

In an interview with AIT, a commercial driver in Abuja expressed his frustration:

The pain is too much; the hardship is too much. We are barely surviving, and now this?

Relevant government agencies and state motor vehicle licensing authorities have been directed to enforce the new rates immediately. Vehicle owners seeking renewals or new registrations must pay according to the revised structure.

This is not just about licences or number plates. It’s about the cumulative effect of all these rising costs on the ordinary Nigerian, another commercial driver laments.
