The Nigerien Armed Forces (FAN) have officially unveiled the Tamgak Wangari, a military all-terrain vehicle designed and assembled entirely in Niger.

The vehicle, developed by local company Guedesign Automotive, was presented during a ceremony at Military Base 101 in Niamey, attended by the Chief of Staff of the Nigerien Armed Forces.

According to the developers, the Tamgak Wangari was engineered by a team of Nigerien engineers to address the challenges of the Sahel region, offering durability, mobility, and adaptability to rough terrain.

The unveiling comes just days after Burkinabe engineers presented domestically manufactured light-armoured vehicles at the second edition of the Synergy of Safety, Security and Defence (SYSDEF) exhibition, held from May 8 to 10 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

The Burkinabe vehicles, adapted from pickup trucks, are designed to support security forces operating in high-risk zones. They have reinforced armour plating, protective turrets, and tactical enhancements to improve troop mobility and protection.

These indicate a regional trend toward strengthening local defence industries amid ongoing insecurity across the Sahel. In recent months, Burkina Faso deployed an ultramodern mobile military hospital to support frontline operations. It has expanded its procurement of military equipment from various international partners, including Egypt, Turkey, and China.

Niger’s launch of the Tamgak Wangari is a notable milestone in the country’s effort to reduce reliance on foreign defence imports and demonstrate local capacity for military innovation.
