The Ministry of Communication, Posts and Digital Economy has announced the official launch of  Starlink internet services in Niger as a significant step in expanding the country’s digital infrastructure. In a statement broadcast on national television, the ministry announced that residential and professional Starlink kits are now available for purchase online and through authorised sellers.

The launch follows an agreement signed between Niger and Starlink in October 2024, aimed at providing reliable internet coverage to the country, particularly in remote and underserved regions. The service promises up to 200 Mbps speeds, which could significantly improve internet access for individuals and businesses in isolated areas.

However, the government has placed strict regulations on Starlink services. Minister of Communication Sidi Mohamed Raliou emphasised that the services are strictly for personal or professional use by the Starlink Kit’s customers. The government also stated that users are “solely responsible for the use of their connection, its possible sharing, and the consequences thereof,” in accordance with current regulations.

Starlink has been reported to be used informally in Niger before the regulation was introduced, with many people relying on the service in an unregulated manner.
