The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had on March 4 issued a Heat Stress Watch warning for multiple states, with temperatures soaring above 40°C in some regions. According to the forecast, Kebbi, Jalingo, and Yola are expected to record the highest temperatures, reaching 42°C, while Lafia will experience 41°C. Cities like Minna and Makurdi are also projected to hit 40°C.

NiMet cautioned that high humidity levels will make the heat feel even more intense, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses such as sunstroke, dehydration, and heat exhaustion. Checks on social media have observed that Nigerians are commenting on the intense heat level in various locations.

@fameos_amos  commented: ”This literally explains it. Stepped out at about 11 for breakfast yesterday morning and I almost passed out twice at Akara Cafe. I was so dizzy I could barely walk and was finding it soo freaking hard to breathe. Had to get a friend to drop me off at home.”
Another user @RichesSoberekon wrote on X,  ”Abi is Abuja ontop volcano?”
It will be recalled that NiMet’s prediction of a prolonged heatwave across Nigeria in February 2024 had temperatures rising significantly in the northern and southern regions. The agency advised the public to take adequate fluid to keep hydrated, wear light clothing to reduce exposure to high temperatures and avoid strenuous activities during peak heat times.
