The Malian government has reassured the public that the new regional biometric passport fully complies with international standards and has not officially encountered diplomatic obstacles.

In a press statement issued by the Ministry of Security and Civil Protection, authorities acknowledged concerns circulating on social media about alleged administrative difficulties CSS passport holders face when dealing with certain embassies and consulates.

However, the ministry clarified that no official reports of such difficulties have been received by their office or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

The government emphasised that the CSS passports, introduced on January 29, 2025, adhere strictly to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) regulations. Furthermore, before their rollout, Mali’s diplomatic missions and consulates worldwide were formally informed and physical passport specimens were provided to facilitate smooth processing.

To address any isolated issues, the Ministry of Security and Civil Protection stated that it is actively engaging with international partners to resolve any concerns linked to internal procedures and specific requirements of foreign missions. The ministry also urged CSS passport holders to report any challenges.

It will be recalled that the Confederation of Sahel States (CSS) announced the launch of its regional passport as a significant step towards enhancing the free movement of people and goods within its member states.

According to a press release by the CSS presidency, the new CSS passports circulated on January 29, 2025. However, old passports bearing the ECOWAS logo remain valid until their expiration date, providing a smooth transition for citizens.
