The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed eight rice shops and a warehouse in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State for producing and distributing counterfeit rice.
Over 1,600 bags of rice, estimated to be worth approximately ₦5 billion, were confiscated during the operation.
The raid, as announced by the agency on X and conducted under the directive of NAFDAC’s Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, was aimed at safeguarding public health during the festive season.
NAFDAC officials extended the enforcement operation to Wuse and Garki markets in Abuja, where counterfeit rice was found repackaged in branded bags, including Big Bull, Royal Stallion, and Tomato Aposo, to deceive consumers.
The agency also discovered empty rice bags bearing popular brand names at the Karu warehouse, further exposing the scale of the counterfeiting operation.
Mr Kenneth Azikiwe, the Director of NAFDAC operations in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), warned counterfeiters to desist from such activities or face severe legal consequences.
