Nigerian Army Releases FIJ’s Fisayo Soyombo Following Media Uproar

1.1k

Investigative journalist and founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), Fisayo Soyombo, has been released by the Nigerian Army following an intense media campaign advocating for his freedom.

Soyombo’s release came after the Nigerian Army claimed that his arrest was linked to alleged involvement in “illegal oil bunkering,” a characterisation FIJ has firmly rejected as a “deliberate mischaracterisation.”

In a statement following his release, FIJ promised to address these allegations while maintaining that its immediate priority is the safety of its founder.

According to FIJ, during Soyombo’s detention, the journalist reportedly shared extensive information regarding his fieldwork with Army officials.

This development has raised fresh concerns about potential risks to his safety post-release.

FIJ emphasised that it is currently assessing the situation to ensure that Soyombo’s safety will not be compromised moving forward.
