The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has detained a federal lawmaker, Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, at the Maitama Police Station for allegedly assaulting a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, in Abuja.
According to videos trending online, the incident occurred during a dispute over a package delivery to the lawmaker.
Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh confirmed that Ikwechegh was taken into custody and is currently undergoing questioning after Abuwatseya reported the incident to the FCT Police Command.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Mr Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwechegh when a dispute arose concerning the delivery method. During this altercation, Mr. Abuwatseya was reportedly physically assaulted, Adeh stated in a press release.
The police statement further highlighted Ikwechegh’s dismissive attitude toward law enforcement, allegedly telling the driver, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,” after reportedly slapping him.
The police described this reaction as a troubling disregard for the authority of law enforcement.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered a thorough investigation to ensure all parties are held accountable.
The Command is committed to conducting an impartial investigation and ensuring justice in all cases. Upon completion of the investigation, appropriate legal action will be taken, the statement read.
The recent incident draws comparisons to a 2019 assault case involving another public official, Senator Elisha Abbo, representing Adamawa North Senatorial District.
Recall, Abbo was caught on camera physically assaulting a woman at an adult toy shop in Abuja after she intervened when Abbo allegedly insulted the shop owner.
The senator, who accused the shop owner of calling him a drunk, was later ordered to pay N50 million in compensation to the victim, Osimibibra Warmate.
