BRICS has officially added 13 new partner countries to its alliance. This announcement was made on Wednesday, October 23, during the ongoing BRICS 2024 summit in Kazan, Russia.

BRICS is an intergovernmental organisation that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates as full members. The newly added countries are Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.

The difference between full membership and partnership status lies in the level of participation in decision-making processes within the bloc. Turkey, a NATO member, formally requested to join BRICS in September—similarly, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar stated earlier in October that the country is exploring full membership in BRICS.

We’ll join when the time is right. We never said we were not joining BRICS. It is about timing. We have already indicated our interest in joining but have not formally written it, he said.

The bloc also introduced its proposed new currency, which features the Nigerian flag and the indigenous Hausa language alongside various international symbols. This development signifies Nigeria’s partnership with BRICS, a plan that began under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
