Bandits Now Rule Sokoto Communities, Impose Levies and Mediate Disputes- LG Chairman Laments to Defence Minister

Bandits have taken control of large areas in Isa Local Government Area, Sokoto State, and now act as rulers and mediators. This was revealed by the local council chairman, Sharifu Kamarawa, during the visit of the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle who came to assess troop performance in the region.

Kamarawa lamented that bandits, including notorious figures like Bello Turji and Dan Bokolo, now wield unchecked authority over communities. He said villages like Gebe, Kamarawa, and Arume, along with many others near the Niger border, are under their control.

His words: “Bandits have taken over parts of my local government area and act as traditional rulers, and judges. Sir, they have become authority of their own. They even mediate and settle disputes communities.

“It’s very painful, sir, that we have no control or authority over our people in that axis, including my village Kamarawa. Bello Turji, Dan Bokolo, Garso and many bandits kingpin are moving freely and exercising their powers over our people without challenge”, he stated.

Kamarawa further explained that the bandits freely tax and impose levies on the communities, causing residents to live in fear and forcing many villages to be abandoned.

He urged the government to deploy more troops to reclaim the region and warned that the bandits’ grip on the area threatens food security as vast farmlands remain inaccessible.
