Nigerian music stars Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Rema, Tems, and Asake have secured nominations for the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs), further solidifying Nigeria’s growing influence on the global music scene. Ayra Starr leads the Nigerian nominees with four nods, including Best New Artist, Best Afrobeats Act, Best African Act, and Best Push.

Overall, the 2024 MTV EMAs are dominated by women, with 10 out of the 11 most-nominated artists being female. Taylor Swift leads the pack with seven nominations, while artists like Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, and Sabrina Carpenter each garnered five nominations. Kendrick Lamar, the only male artist among the top nominees, received four nominations, sharing this distinction with Ayra Starr,Beyoncé, and LISA from BLACKPINK.

In the Best Afrobeats Act category, Nigerian artists Burna Boy, Tems, Rema, Asake, and Ayra Starr will compete alongside South Africa’s Tyla, who has previously sparked controversy by stating she doesn’t make Afrobeats during her winning speech in that category at the 2024 VMAs.

This year’s nominations reflect the global reach of pop music, with artists from Nigeria, South Africa, Thailand, and England among the top contenders. The awards ceremony is set to be a landmark moment for African artists, particularly in the Afrobeats genre.
