At least 78 people have drowned when a boat carrying 278 passengers capsised in Lake Kivu in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The boat sank on Thursday, according to the provincial governor of South Kivu.

The boat had set off from Minova in South Kivu province and was about 700 metres from the port when it sank. Video footage showed a packed, multi-deck vessel tilting before overturning, throwing passengers into the water. Survivors and bodies were recovered from the lake, with at least 58 people saved.

South Kivu Governor Jean Jacques Purisi confirmed the death toll but warned that more bodies may still be found in the coming days.

“It’ll take at least three days to get the exact numbers, because not all the bodies have been found yet,” he said.

The causes of the accident are being investigated, according to DR Congo’s authorities.
