The Weekend And The Queenstown Kings Dominate AMAA 2024 Nominations

The 2024 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) announced its nominees yesterday, with “The Weekend” and “The Queenstown Kings” emerging as top contenders. The event, set for November 2nd, 2024, will mark the 20th edition of the awards, under the theme ‘Celebrating African Creativity.’

Daniel Oriahi’s psychological thriller “The Weekend” leads the pack with 16 nominations, including coveted categories such as Best Film, Best Director, and Achievement in Cinematography. The film explores a young woman’s journey to uncover her fiancé’s family secrets after persuading him to confront his troubled past.

Close behind, South African film “The Queenstown Kings” garnered 15 nominations, also competing for Best Film and Best Director. The story centres on a talented soccer player who must choose between his own ambitions and his team’s success when his estranged father who is a professional football player returns.

Other notable films include “This is Lagos,” “Under The Hanging Tree,” and “Out of Breath,” each securing nine nominations.

The AMAA, founded in 2005 by Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, continues to celebrate African filmmaking, promoting cinematic excellence across the continent.
