Kenya’s Official Oscar Movie Submission ‘Nawi’ Bags Four AMAA Nominations

Kenya has officially submitted the film Nawi as its entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards. Similarly, Nawi has secured five nominations at the Africa Movie Academy Awards. 

Premiering in Nairobi on August 24, 2024, Nawi has already gained critical acclaim, earning five nominations at the 2024 Africa Movie Academy Awards for categories including cinematography, editing, male supporting role, young/promising actor and Makeup. Directed by Vallentine Chelluget, Apuu Mourine, and Kevin Schmutzler, the film’s visuals highlight Kenya’s contrasting landscapes, enhancing its emotional narrative.

The movie, which explores themes of identity, tradition, and societal change, follows the journey of a 14-year-old girl in Turkana navigating cultural and modern challenges.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the film shines a light on child marriage, a significant issue in the Turkana region, where a 2015 UNICEF report revealed that one-third of women were married before the age of 18. Through Nawi, the filmmakers hope to bring international attention to this pressing issue while offering a compelling cinematic experience.
