UN General Assembly: Burkina Faso Accuses Ukraine Again Of Sponsoring Terrorists In Sahel Region

Burkina Faso’s Foreign Minister Karamoko Traore while addressing the United Nations General Assembly on Monday reiterated the country’s accusation against Ukraine of sponsoring terrorists in the Sahel region.

In August, the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), comprising Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, formally accused Ukraine of supporting international terrorism in the Sahel region, urging the UN Security Council to take immediate action.

While the UN Security Council are yet to act on the letter, Traore at the UN General Assembly called on the Security Council to take a “strong decision” on the AES’s appeal.

He said the AES was created to protect the Sahel countries from these security threats, which he said have been worsened deliberately by external forces.

During his speech, Traore highlighted the progress in Burkina Faso’s fight against terrorism, noting that nearly 70 per cent of the country’s territory is now under government control, up from 40 per cent in 2022.

He also defended the Burkinabe Defence and Security Forces, debunking allegations of misconduct and labelling the allegations as a propaganda against the forces. He noted the “professionalism and stellar conduct” of the security forces which he said was demonstrated “through their participation in peacekeeping operations.”

Traore further called for UN Security Council reforms to include Africa, advocating for greater representation to “repair the persistent injustice against Africa.”

Liberian President Joseph Boakai recently called on UN member states to back Liberia’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council in 2026.
