A video circulating online has revealed that African migrants in Lebanon are being instructed by their Lebanese employers to stay behind and take care of their properties, while the employers flee amid the ongoing war between Israel and Lebanon.

The migrants are left to face the danger of bomb attacks from Israel without any protection or support.

“The moment madam left, she told me to stay in the house. When I stayed in the house, Bomb in the house [sic],” one of the victims said in the video. “I left my phone in the house. The fire everywhere in the house.”

Another migrant shared that after the Israeli attacks, her employer abandoned her on the streets, saying, “there are plenty of Africans here, let me find my sisters.”

The affected migrants are now seeking safety near the sea, where they feel safer. However they barely have what to eat, nor phones to contact their families.

“We don’t have money to use,” said another of the stranded migrants who is also a lady. “Now we are still in the streets. We don’t have y6anything to eat. That’s the problem.”

Lebanon, like many Arabic countries operates under the Kafala sponsorship system, a system which ties migrant workers to their employers. The system has been criticised for its treatment of migrant workers, particularly Africans, who have faced poor working conditions and racism in the country.

Several reports have documented how Africans face racism in Lebanon, a country in the middle east that neighbours Israel.
