Netflix has announced the release date for Hijack ’93, a film that recounts the 1993 hijacking of a Nigerian Airways plane. The film, directed and produced by Rogers Ofime and Robert Peters, is set to premiere on October 25, 2024. The project was developed under Charles Okpaleke’s Play Network Studios.

Hijack ’93 revisits the events of October 25, 1993, when four young Nigerians – Richard Ogunderu, Kabir Adenuga, Benneth Oluwadaisi, and Kenny Rasaq-Lawal seized a plane heading to Abuja from Lagos. Their bold protest demanded the government recognise the results of the June 12 elections and transfer power to MKO Abiola. The hijackers forced the plane to land in the Niger Republic, drawing international attention.

The film stars renowned actors, including John Dumelo and Efa Iwara, who underwent aviation training for three months as pilots. Also featured are Idia Aisien, Nancy Isime, Sharon Ooja, and Jemima Osunde, cast as flight attendants.

Charles Okpaleke, CEO of Play Network Studios, had previously expressed his commission to telling Nigerian stories so that the next generation and the one after would know their Nigerian history.
